Job Ref:

Lead Backend Engineer (Ruby on Rails / AWS)

You probably chose to be a dev because you love solving problems, and to be perfectly honest a lot of the problems in tech are insanely interesting ones that need to be solved.

But the number of companies actually tackling those problems is super low.

In fact, out of the hundreds of startups out there at the moment, there are very few that can boast that they're actually making a difference, and they often miss out on the things that are important - work/life balance, a good salary, benefits that make your life better…so what do you do?

Well, you could join a company that ticks every single one of those boxes. I mean, you're good enough, right?

Based all over the UK (they're remote first) this company have grown their userbase to almost 2.4million unique users over the last few years, and they're still growing.

The best thing about all of this? They've developed a platform that's actually making a difference.

Reducing food waste, saving the environment, and providing resources to the people in our society that need it the most- all of that awesomeness from an application that can sit in the palm of your hand.

They're a startup, so you won't be joining a huge technical team spanning multiple floors of an office in London. Instead, you'll be working with a technical team of 10 where every single person on the team contributes their own ideas, has a shared goal for the platform, and most importantly, wants to make what they're doing now even better.

Most of their tech stack is heavily based on Ruby/Ruby on Rails, and from an architecture & infrastructure perspective they've found their home with AWS. As this is a lead role, they're looking for someone that really knows their way around this stuff, and it'd be a huge bonus if you've also got a good level of knowledge in JavaScript (React to be more precise).

If you don't know one or two things though, that's okay- they know that devs often learn on the fly, and they'll teach and support you with everything you need to learn to get up to speed.

They're split into two teams at the moment, commercial/operational, so as the Lead Dev you'll be responsible for working across both teams and bridging that gap from both a technical and interpersonal perspective.

The Head of Engineering is still super hands-on (still contributes to their architecture and codebase every day), and you'll be encouraged to work with him closely to develop solutions to the more complex problems in the business- stuff like 'how can we scale x?', 'how should we approach the implementation of y feature?'…big picture stuff.

In terms of what's in it for you, well the list is endless really. Alongside a great salary, true freedom to work how you want to (no clock-watching here), and the ability to work completely remotely, you'll be joining a company that's grown significantly in the last few years, has actually changed the world, and has their eyes set firmly on the future.

Have ideas? Work on them. Don't like the way something is done? Change it. They're a business that's gotten to where they are thanks to their people, and they acknowledge (and appreciate) that.

So, tired of doing the same stuff every day? Ready to work somewhere that's making a difference?
