The Role

The Sustainability Manager operates within the Sustainability and Environmental Planning Team.

Main responsibilities

Leadership and Management

* Manage and prioritise a busy workload. Understand how your work contributes to DIO's aims and objectives and supports defence activities. Plan and undertake appropriate personal development to ensure core competences and specialist skills are kept up to date.

* Promote strong working relationships both within the DIO Sustainability Team and with other teams across DIO and MOD.

SME Advice and Policy

* Provide advice on delivery of the MOD's sustainability legal and policy obligations to support MOD objectives across the defence estate, and to ensure that the line managers and other appropriate staff are aware of any serious issues so that they can alert DIO senior management. This includes advice to the Senior Sustainability Manager on the development, and future direction, of policy and legal compliance; development of policy in response to formal tasking, assist with drafting responses to Parliamentary, Ministerial and FOI correspondence.

Compliance and Assurance

* Carry out scrutiny of business cases and associated review notes, on behalf of DIO and MOD, to ensure that environmental and sustainable development principles and policies have been embedded into projects and programmes.

* Peer review environmental reports, assessments & appraisals prepared in-house or by consultants to ensure quality, accuracy and consistency of approach and legal compliance.

Stakeholder Engagement

* Build and maintain effective relationships with key customers including Requirements Managers, Project Managers and Facilities Managers. As a MOD SME on sustainability, assist in the drafting and review of publications, and undertake presentations, briefings and deliver training within the MOD and to external stakeholders to raise awareness of sustainability responsibilities and achievements and ensure that effective liaison is developed and maintained.

Please note that DIO Sutton Coldfield is currently undergoing a relocation study and will likely move to Whittington Barracks.

Please note this part time role will be expected to work on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays to ensure adequate business coverage.

Person specification

* Proven experience in providing environmental and sustainability advice for either the management of land, infrastructure or construction projects;

* A working understanding of environmental management systems and sustainability assessment tools for organisations, construction projects, and climate risk;

* Environmental auditing experience;

* Authorship of environmental reports, assessments & appraisals; or peer reviewing environmental reports, assessments & appraisals prepared in-house or by consultants to ensure quality, accuracy and consistency of approach and legal compliance; and

* Experience in working with regulators and wider groups of stakeholders.

* A full UK driving licence is required

* A relevant environmental degree and applicable post qualification employment or equivalent combination of skills and applicable experience.

Technical Services provides in-house consultancy to DIO and the wider MOD; the specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span construction, engineering, electronic and physical security requirements, safety systems, environmental management, sustainable development, access and recreation, historic environment and natural environment.

The Sustainability and Environmental Planning Team provides
specialist expertise to assist Top Level Budget holders (such as the Army) to create and maintain a sustainable, resource-efficient and resilient Defence Estate in line with Government policy, both in the UK and overseas. To achieve this, the team works closely with each site, the wider MOD, other government departments, overseas authorities, commercial partners, industry and a diverse range of external stakeholders
