The Role

The Environmental Adviser operates within the Sustainability and Environmental Planning Team.

Main responsibilities

• To provide environmental and sustainability advice and support to HQ DIO Overseas and Training (HQ OS&Trg) and International Estate as environmental focal point for Gibraltar, Falklands, Ascension, Europe (SHAPE), Far East, and deliver support outside of these locations as directed. Routine business meetings are to be attended within RAF Wyton, with further meetings in Warminster Garrison and Westdown Camp.

• Embedding environmental and sustainable development principles and policies into projects and programmes through screening programmes work; providing technical advice; and through the delivery of Sustainability Appraisals and Environmental Assessments.

• Supporting the military customer with the effective management and audit of their Environmental Management System to ISO 14001:2015.

• Undertaking environmental audits for the delivery of contracts and specific projects providing reports back into MOD and external bodies as required.

• Support the delivery of Climate Risk Assessments; and Defence Related Environmental Assessment Method (DREAM) for infrastructure projects as required.

• Providing a consistent approach to environmental and sustainability management, drawing on expertise from DIO Technical Services, and supporting the delivery of environmental and sustainable development training.

• Managing, auditing or advising on the management of consultants, advising the scope of works required to achieve plans and programmes, and maximise value for money for MOD.

• Peer reviewing environmental reports, assessments & appraisals prepared in-house or by consultants to ensure quality, accuracy and consistency of approach and legal compliance.

• Supporting the maintenance and management of the Integrated Rural Management Plan (IRMP) programme.

• Responding to Ministerial or Parliamentary Enquiries, Freedom of Information requests, and similar formal correspondence.

• Supporting the development and update of MOD joint services policy and guidance as required.

• Supporting arising environmental and sustainability requirements as directed by the Senior Environmental Adviser.

Person specification

• Proven experience in providing environmental and sustainability advice for either the management of land, infrastructure or construction projects;
• A working understanding of environmental management systems and sustainability assessment tools for organisations, construction projects, and climate risk;
• Environmental auditing experience;
• Authorship of environmental reports, assessments & appraisals; or peer reviewing environmental reports, assessments & appraisals prepared in-house or by consultants to ensure quality, accuracy and consistency of approach and legal compliance; and
• Experience in working with regulators and wider groups of stakeholders.

• A relevant environmental degree and applicable post qualification employment;
• equivalent combination of skills and applicable experience.

Technical Services provides in-house consultancy to DIO and the wider MOD; the specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span construction, engineering, electronic and physical security requirements, safety systems, environmental management, sustainable development, access and recreation, historic environment and natural environment.

The Sustainability and Environmental Planning Team provides specialist expertise to assist Top Level Budget holders (such as the Army) to create and maintain a sustainable, resource-efficient and resilient Defence Estate in line with Government policy, both in the UK and overseas. To achieve this, the team works closely with each site, the wider MOD, other government departments, overseas authorities, commercial partners, industry and a diverse range of external stakeholders
