Role Profile

As an Engineer Industrial Placement student, you will work as a part of a project team, alongside skilled and experienced individuals who are motivated to train and coach you on the day-to-day skills required to work closely with our customers, both internal and external. You will learn the tools, techniques and approaches used by engineering professionals and apply them in a controlled environment to ensure projects are delivered on time, to quality and to budget. Industrial Placement student will support their team to ensure that engineering practices are followed on all aspects of project definition and delivery.
As an Industrial Placement student you will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects across our varied client base which will enable you to explore and select a career path which builds on your particular strengths as well as gives you exposure to the range of engineering roles in a project environment.
This role will also include developing an understanding of the core values, organisational structure and working practices of BAE Systems Applied Intelligence.
As an Industrial Placement student you could work across a number of disciplines or project roles within our business, these include: Engineering Management, Software Engineering, Application Support & Maintenance, Systems Engineering & Architecture, Physical Science & Technology and Infrastructure Engineering. Depending on your project role, you could be working on one or more of the below projects:

Project Role Descriptions

Software Engineer - As an Industrial Placement student, we expect you to be ready to tackle (and enjoy!) programming tasks from the outset, but we will take the time to mentor you through smaller packages of work and enhancements to our product range. You will work primarily in java, however we always look for the best framework for the job; some of our developments use c# .net, c++ and html5 technologies. Day to day tasks could include:

* Assisting in the design, test and implementation of software which forms part of a properly engineered system
* Overcoming development obstacles to deliver quality code on time
* Helping to specify user/system interfaces
* Assisting in producing detailed designs and documents using required standards, methods and tools
* Understanding and translating business design into a logical design, for a simple software application
* Producing physical designs that describe the required structure and behaviour of a simple software application characterised by low-risk non-functional requirements Electronic Engineer - Our Electronic Engineers design and develop analogue and digital electronics, VHDL and embedded/low level software for a wide range of electronic systems. We expect you to take responsibility and tackle a number of different development tasks in different disciplines. Working under guidance from our expert engineers you could implement complex signal-processing algorithms in VHDL, debug the RF chain on a software radio, and develop embedded software to run on low power microcontrollers or develop ruggedised devices for challenging environments. Day to day tasks could include:

* Contributing to the full engineering lifecycle, from working with clients through to every aspect of hardware design and manufacture
* Implementing complex signal processing algorithms in VHDL
* Designing switch mode power supplies, working on low power embedded systems, developing ruggedized devices for challenging environments
* Assisting colleagues to pitch new ideas to clients
* Managing multiple assignments independently, with support from colleagues
* Carrying out research, data collection and analysis Test Analyst - Test Analysts play a crucial role in the delivery of projects and their involvement starts at the requirements analysis stage. Initially, testing roles are likely to include defining and creating test cases from functional and technical specifications, executing test scripts and reporting the results clearly. Day to day tasks could include:

* Defining and creating test cases from the analysis of functional specifications
* Interpreting and executing sets of simple test scripts using agreed methods and standards
* Checking test results and document test failures and successes compared with pre-determined criteria, in accordance with agreed standards, reporting test results to your manager and/or other colleagues in a clear and concise manner
* Assisting colleagues and clients/users in defining acceptance tests for systems
* Assisting colleagues and clients/users in reviewing system requirements in terms of testability
* Assisting in performing maintenance through the analysis of log files and system faults
* Contributing to maintenance and installation work Cyber Security Technical Specialist - This is an exciting role for people who love computers and technology, working in the most deeply technical part of the Cyber Security domain. Whether it's researching new technologies or creating software that makes a difference in the real world, you'll always be working at the cutting edge of what's possible. Working in Operational Cyber is a hands-on job, so we want people who genuinely enjoy a challenge and getting stuck in to making software or taking systems apart to see how they work. The Operational Cyber team only picks our customer's biggest challenges to work on - if it's easy, we'll let someone else do it! Day to day tasks could include:

* Working with varied technologies, using the latest and current versions
* Working within teams to develop high assurance products
* Performing cutting edge research
* Developing novel and innovate solution to challenging problems
* Interacting with customers and reacting rapidly to changing requirements Data Analyst - As a data analyst, you will work on client projects to undertake research, collect and analyse data. You will advise clients on how to extract the business benefit from data to inform their business processes and future strategies. Day to day tasks could include:

* Carrying out research, data collection and analysis
* Evaluating and reconciling information gathered from multiple sources
* Building basic process maps in the support of analysis work
* Designing and implementing technical solutions to match client expectations What to Expect on the Programme

Entry Requirements

* On track to achieve/ already achieved a 2:1 or above in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths subject
* 128 UCAS points or equivalent (as per the 2017 UCAS tariff) Desired Technical Ability

Aptitude in one or more of the following:

* Java - Java JEE, JSP, JSF, EJB, Spring, JDBC
* Infrastructure - systems administration, network security & engineering, protocols (TCP/IP)
