The Thales Security and Communications (SIX) Business Unit supports and develops state of the art communications, protection and security systems and products for a number of high profile customers. Our systems provide the means by which all communications are undertaken whilst protecting lives at all levels.The Role We are looking for a Trials Engineer to support the team based at our new purpose built test facility in Somerset. The successful candidate will be working in a fast passed research trials environment, in the field of Radar Signature Measurement. A good understanding of the methodology associated with accurate and repeatable measurements is a must.Key Responsibilities and Tasks: Appreciation of the fundamentals of Mechanical & Electro-Mechanical Engineering within a trials environment with specific technical knowledge as follows: Ability to understand the constraints associated with designing mechanical structures associated with the activity of Radar Cross Section measurement. Full practical knowledge of low observable support structures including polystyrene, strings and stings. Ability to contribute to the activities associated with the research, planning and design of mechanical and electro-mechanical subsystems for the use in new and existing radar systems. Ability to technically direct mechanical sub-contractors. Practical knowledge of pillar drills, lathes, fly presses, band saws and other workshop equipment. Ability to create and manipulate 3D mechanical models and 2D mechanical drawings ideally with experience of PTC Wildfire and/or Creo. Along with knowledge of how to apply the ASME Y14.5-2009 Standard. An understanding of FEA and the ability to make mathematical calculations to support this analysis. Material and finish knowledge and an understanding of the application of this knowledge to mechanical design. Ability to generate engineering documentation and an understanding of configuration control of this documentation. To originate, specify and prove designs to meet Radar Signature Measurement (RSM) service operational requirements. To ensure that RSM service safety requirements are addressed in a manner consistent with company processes. To support forward planning for service delivery activities and to support the generation of relevant development plans. To support the generation of cost and schedule information and support the review of that data. Experience & Qualifications: A degree in Mechanical Engineering plus relevant Mechanical experience or an HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Structural planning of mechanical components. Experience of working in a research based trails environment. The use of instrumentation within a manufacturing environment. Demonstrate an understanding of data analysis methods. Writing engineering reports and procedures Computer literate, including basic excel spread sheet creation and manipulation Essential Working in and or / leading small development teams A clear commercial awareness when working in a customer facing role Working in a trials environment A HNC or BEng degree or equivalent in relevant engineering discipline (Mechanical, Integrated Engineering) or equivalent experience Driving licence Able to confidently work at heights up to 16m Apply At Thales we provide CAREERS and not only jobs.
