We are seeking a proactive and technically skilled Design Engineer with experience in mechanical and electrical building services design. Reporting to our Non-Domestic Design Lead, you will play a critical role in the design and implementation of medium to large-scale GSHP installations, both new-build and retrofit, across sectors such as commercial, educational, healthcare, and complex residential developments.
Your Key Responsibilities
- System Design & Calculation: Perform detailed calculations to size heating and cooling systems, including heat pumps, vessels, emitters, pumps, and pipework.
- Survey Management & Data Collection: Lead and coordinate surveys to collect critical data on building structure, utilities, and existing systems. Manage communication with subcontractors and review architectural plans to gather insights for custom GHSP designs.
- Design Documentation & Technical Reporting: Prepare detailed documentation and technical reports, covering system specifications, energy modeling results, and design decisions. Prepare and review M&E designs, ensuring all designs align with Kensa’s high standards and client requirements.
- Project Management: Develop and manage design project schedules using tools such as Microsoft Project to ensure timelines are met. Oversee essential surveys (e.g. asbestos, mechanical, electrical) to gather construction information and address specific project requirements.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all designs meet CDM 2015 regulations and safety standards, proactively maintaining Health & Safety compliance.
- Support Sales & Estimation Teams: Work closely with sales and estimating teams, offering technical guidance and reviewing design proposals to ensure designs meet client expectations and budgets.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date on industry trends and Kensa products, contributing ideas to enhance systems and practices.
About You
- Relevant degree qualification and previous experience in mechanical building services.
- Sound understanding of engineering principles.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and GSHP technologies, with the ability to apply this practically in designs.
- Ability to review, appraise, and comment on detailed M&E specifications and drawings.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and MS Office (including MS Project).
- Proven ability to work independently, with minimal oversight, to deliver functional designs.
- Strong communication skills to effectively liaise with clients and ensure high-quality project deliverables.
- Knowledge of building physics and experience with relevant software such as IES or Design Builder would be desirable.
- A working knowledge of electrical and controls for building services would be desirable.
