Job Requirements/Description

This 4-year programme offers you the opportunity to learn on the job while completing a BEng degree, all while earning a salary from day one. You’ll develop a broad range of skills, knowledge, and experience, preparing you to work on projects of national importance.

About the programme

The programme combines study at Weston College with full immersion in our Engineering Design team in Bristol.

In the workplace, you will initially shadow colleagues to develop a solid understanding of a Design Engineer’s role and its application to naval and defence engineering. You will grow your experience through exposure to work such as Launch Control System projects, Research & Development, and In-Service Support.

As you progress, you will begin to take on more of your own tasks and start working independently, collaborating with your team to solve problems effectively. Your responsibilities will be carefully managed to ensure you are always equipped for the tasks at hand. Over time, you will develop practical skills, including requirements definition, electrical design, and the use of hand tools and test equipment, all while enhancing your teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

Your education/training

You will gain your degree by studying for a BEng (Honours) with Weston College. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll spend time at the Weston College Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton and the University of the West of England’s Frenchay Campus.

In addition to pursuing your degree, you may have the opportunity to complete further qualifications essential for your role, such as IOSH.

Future prospects

By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be well-prepared for the role of Electrical Design Engineer, with excellent short- and long-term career prospects. You will have gained specialist skills working in defence and played an integral role in creating a safer and more secure world.

What you’ll need

  • A Levels at BBC or above, including Maths and at least one science or technology subject, or a T Level at Pass, or a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM including Further Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Level 2 English and Maths at 5/B or above.
  • Please note, applicants who do not meet the above academic requirements but who have demonstrable, relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for.

What you’ll get

We’ll provide you with a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow your career.

In addition, you’ll benefit from:

  • Fully funded qualification
  • Personal development training and opportunities
  • Minimum 28 days holiday allowance including bank holidays
  • Competitive pension scheme
  • Employee share scheme
  • Flexible benefits including cycle to work scheme and employee shopping savings portal
