Purpose of the role:

  • To deliver training programs to the driving workforce, ensuring the highest professional standards and compliance with current legislation and BWC safe working procedures. 
  • To improve and develop driver knowledge, skills and confidence. 
  • To ensure a robust driver assessment process is in place.
  • To reduce and prevent accidents and incidents.

Key Responsibilities:

Driver training and development 

  • Ensure a clear map of training requirements for the different driver roles. 
  • Effectively onboard new drivers, review and standardise the approach. 
  • Implement a buddy system for new drivers.
  • Provide adhoc practical support to all of our drivers.
  • Review and improve driver training, developing training course materials and maintaining a clear driver handbook. 
  • Deliver vehicle familiarisation training to drivers as and when required.
  • Coach and mentor drivers, both on and off the road. 
  • Manage the driver CPC process, ensuring all drivers maintain their certification. 
  • Assess possibility of delivering CPC in-house in future. 
  • Develop driver skills with bespoke driver training packages, based on outcomes of assessments, investigations and key data.  
  • Support the implementation of a Driver Development Program, e.g. loaders eager to obtain a HGV license. 
  • Manage the relationship with our training providers and ensure training is adequate for BWCs needs.
  • Manage the process and completion of Learning Agreements for anyone who joins the Driver Development Program.
  • Train managers/supervisors on relevant in-house courses. 
  • Keep and maintain up to date and accurate records of all driver training undertaken.
  • Deliver training relating to drivers’ hours / tachographs / WTD rules and regulations to new starters and existing drivers.

Driver assessment 

  • Perform periodic driver assessments. 
  • Review the driver assessment process and ensure a robust and standardised approach. 
  • Ensure monitoring programs are in place and identify and focus on high-risk groups. 

Driver recruitment 

  • To advise on improvements and input to the driver recruitment and selection process. 
  • To undertake assessment of drivers during the interview process. 

Accident prevention 

  • Work with key stakeholders to reduce and prevent accident damage. 
  • Work with key stakeholders to improve fleet fuel efficiency. 
  • Monitor and review key data, e.g. speed data, driving metrics to identify trends and root causes of poor driver behaviour. 
  • Create clear action plans to drive improvements. 
  • Work with key stakeholders to review, monitor and audit key driver compliance areas, in line with our operating license. 
  • Work with the internal comms lead to effectively communicate driver safety campaigns. 

Essential Requirements for the Role:

  • HGV class 2 licence.
  • HGV/LGV Trainer.
  • Driver Assessor qualification.
  • Ability to use Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents.
  • Good Presentation Skills to groups and individuals.
  • Working knowledge of large goods vehicles and other relevant legislation.
  • A good knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.
  • A passionate and professional approach to health, safety and training, displaying credibility and presence within the workplace.
  • A good technical understanding of large goods vehicles and transport operational requirements.
  • A good attention to detail and accuracy with an ability to work on your own initiative.
  • Good communication at all levels and organisational skills.
